Brooke Langton was to star as twentysomething Elizabeth Gillcrest, whose life had been turned upside down when her older husband (Sydney Pollack) hired Gene Rivers (Josh Hopkins), from a "Tempt-a-Mate", to determine whether she'd be unfaithful to him. After giving in to tempation and sleeping with Gene, Elizabeth found herself kicked out by her husband and in need of work, which sparked her own career at the "Tempt-a-Mate" firm.

In December of 2000, FOX rushed the one-hour romantic comedy into production with a 13-episode order as insurance against an expected writers and actors strike that would affect the Fall 2001 season; however, the strike never happened. During filming of the seventh episode, in May of 2001, the entire order was canceled due to creative differences between Glenn Gordon Caron and the network. FOX gave Paramount the option to shop the project around to other networks, after having invested around $10 million, but there were no takers.

Silver Cup Studios in Long Island City served as homebase to the production, while some scenes were filmed on location in and around New York City.
