In the play, Rudnick ponders what it would be like had God started out by making Adam and Steve, rather than Adam and Eve. Adam and Steve (along with Jane and Mabel) take us on a journey from Mesopotamia to a K Mart on Christmas Eve as they struggle for faith and search for God.
Amy Sedaris played the God-like Stage Manager, Alan Tudyk played Adam, and Orlando Pabotoy played Father Joseph, a Bible-thumping minister, as well as several roles in which he could be described as a boy toy.
Jay Goede replaced Juan Carlos Hernandez as Steve and Peg Healey replaced Amy Sedaris as the Stage Manager when the production re-opened at the Minetta Lane Theatre on 29 January 1999. Julie Halston replaced Lisa Kron on 2 March 1999. Lea DeLaria replaced Becky Ann Baker as Jane and Shannon Burkett replaced Kathryn Meisle as Mabel on 16 March 1999. Jesse Tyler Ferguson replaced Alan Tudyk as Adam on 30 March 1999.
