Hilda shows up at Betty's apartment to show her the box of new Prada sunglasses that she bought for $2 a pair in Chinatown. She' not dismayed after Betty points out that they're actually "Plada," not Prada. Betty complains about how Amanda has been mooching groceries without contributing financially. Just then, Amanda comes in, fresh from an early morning shopping spree, which prevents her from being able to pay her share of the rent. Wilhelmina agrees to go with Christina to her seven-month check-up, but only to get out of having to meet with Connor, whom she's trying to avoid, because of her failed seduction in Florida. Betty is disappointed to learn from Daniel that the magazine is eliminating overtime because of budget cuts. He does, however, soften the blow by telling her that he's looking for idea pitches for ModeNY.com. Molly interrupts and Daniel gets rid of Betty quickly, so he can have Molly to himself. Molly asks Daniel for a charity donation and for him to accompany her to the event that evening, because Connor is unavailable. Betty tells Christina about her financial situation and says that Amanda blames every bad thing that she does on someone she calls "Bad Ronald." Christina tells Betty that she should try to enjoy her new life in Manhattan. She says that when she first arrived she didn't have much money either, but she was always able to find fun things to do. This gives Betty inspiration for her ModeNY.com pitch: "A Day in Manhattan on Zero Dollars." Unfortunately, the things that she thinks are free and fun (visiting the American Indian Museum; feeding squirrels in Madison Square Park), Amanda and the others in the meeting find dry and boring. Amanda talks about how she crashed a red carpet event for the premiere of Tom Cruise's new movie and she had great food at the party. She then says that she hasn't paid for a drink or a meal in years. Wilhelmina suggests that the article be changed to, "How I Blew Ten Grand without Actually Spending a Dime." Daniel tells Betty to team up with Amanda to write the article. Claire, who had witnessed Daniel's interaction with Molly earlier, visits her son to caution him about developing feelings for his friend's fiancée. After leaving her doctor's office, Christina tries to get Wilhelmina to have an interest in the sonogram, but the diva is distracted. When Marc tells her, via cellphone, that Connor is still looking for her, Willi feels motivated to spend more quality time with her surrogate. Amanda and Betty gather a collection of makeup samples at a posh department store (their current non-spending tally: $800), but Betty feels guilty about taking free things, even though it's the sole purpose of their article. Amanda tries on a $2000 dress that she intends to return within 30 days (total: $2800). Amanda succeeds in justifying such behavior and she convinces Betty to get an expensive scarf, then they head off to a gallery opening in Chelsea for free wine and appetizers. While Betty admires the art, Amanda spots a couple guys who can take the two of them out for dinner. After eating expensive food and drinking a lot of champagne, Amanda and Betty are abandonded by their dates, Claudio and Luka, who planned on sticking the girls with the check all along (total: $10,000-plus). Molly shows up for her "date" with Daniel and she drops some food on her dress. Daniel takes her down to the Mode closet so she can find something else to wear. Betty decides to call the restaurant's manager over to tell her that she's doing a profile on the establishment for Mode's website. Betty's bluff works and the manager says that she'll take care of their bill. After they leave the restaurant, Amanda discovers that Claudio and Luka had stolen her wallet. To make matters worse, her wallet had contained the rent money, which Amanda was going to bring to the landlord herself, because she knows that the guy creeps Betty out. Betty then gives a litany of Amanda's recent actions and Amanda tries to blame them on "Bad Ronald," but Betty tells her that it was all the doing of "Bad Amanda." Betty goes to visit Ignacio, who tells her that perhaps he raised her to be a little too responsible, leaving her unable to loosen up enough to enjoy herself. Molly changes into a red strapless dress and asks Daniel to help her to zip it. During their moment of intimately close proximity, the two almost kiss, which causes Molly to run away from Daniel in distress. Betty turns in her article and Daniel tells her that it's great. He also says that he'd like for her to work with Amanda again to turn the piece into a regular feature. He even floats her a much-needed cash advance to sweeten the deal, which it does. Betty finds Amanda, who has begun hostessing at a tacky restaurant franchise to earn extra money. She thanks Amanda for forcing her to have fun and tells her about their new website feature. Marc shows Wilhelmina a surveillance video of Daniel and Molly, which makes Willi realize that Daniel's obvious attraction for the schoolmarm could be the wedge she needs to divide Connor and his fiancée. When Amanda gets home that night, Betty gives her the gift of "Plada" to make amends.
Nathanaël Maïni is named in the opening credits, even though his recurring character is only seen at the staff meeting and has no dialogue.
